For the last two plus years, Snapchat’s interactive geofilters have been extremely popular amongst 18-24yr olds, and creating your own filter for your university is easier than you may think!
Let’s take a look at the necessary steps and the available options to you when making your own Snapchat geofilter for your school:
Step 1: Select the Correct Geofilter Type
Snapchat has also recently expanded the possibilities for creating custom geofilters. You can now choose between creating a permeant community filter for your campus (based on your location) or an on-demand filter for an event (based on choosing a location and selecting dates).
If you decide you want to make a filter for an event, Snapchat has also recently introduced an online design tool for the on-demand filters, which is useful if you aren’t highly skilled with Photoshop and Illustrator, or are just looking for something quick to add to your pics.
These on-demand filters allow you to choose from three types of events: celebrations, birthdays, weddings, and also special holidays when they are coming up. They have preset text, along with customizable text features.
However, in this how-to, we will be focusing on making a community filter. But if you think you may just want to start off with an on-demand filter, click here.
Step 2: Go Over Snapchat’s Geofilter Guidelines
Snapchat provides a list of guidelines for creating custom filters. At the moment, logos or trademarks are not eligible, so creating a custom design for your school is a must. The geofilter must be custom work, or it will not be approved. Additionally, Snapchat has another list of rules and tips for submissions.
Step 3: Start Creating Your School’s Geofilter!
With a design in mind, the next thing you need to do is create a file in Photoshop or Illustrator in the regulation size of 1080×1920.
Once you have created your custom filter, make sure to save it for web, as a transparent PNG under 300KBs.
Step 4: Submit Your Campus Geofilter for Approval
Now that you have finished making your filter, it’s time to submit your work to Snapchat. All you have to do is go to this page to submit your geofilter.
The page will have you circle a location area on their interactive map and enter standard information about yourself.
- Higher Education Marketing Pro tip: A great way to help your filter be approved is to write a short explanation of why this location (aka your school, campus) is meaningful to you and others. It can act as a huge selling point for why Snapchat should choose your filter, and can really help in the process!
Step 5: Wait For Approval Then Enjoy Your Campus Geofilter!
Community geofilters usually take a bit of time to get approved due to their increasing popularity, so it’s a given that the workers at Snapchat are pretty busy. It can take from three days to several weeks to hear a response from the Snapchat team about whether your geofilter has been approved to be a community filter.
Once your filter has been approved, it can take up to 24-hrs for the filter to be ready to use for people at your school to use. And if it is not approved, you will receive an email explaining Snapchat’s rationale. Take these reasons into consideration, make some edits, and try again, it’s worth a second shot!
